My History

What I Do

I am a writer and historian with a special interest in the way historians are developing their uses of DNA testing.

I've been writing on this topic since the first DNA tests aimed at genealogists were launched back in 2000. Since that time I've written two books this subject, lectured to almost fifty family history groups around England, written two academic papers and dozens of articles for family history magazines, and been interviewed by many national and local radio stations.

From time to time I've also reviewed book proposals for a major UK publisher, acted as an anonymous reviewer for a leading mainsteam academic genetics journal, and created online surveys for family history groups to poll their members.

Today I maintain a consulting arrangement with Family Tree DNA — the world's #1 supplier of DNA tests to the family history community, based in Houston, TX — and I teach online courses on the topic of DNA testing.

What I can do for you

I am available to lecture on DNA and family history, whether to family history groups on an individual basis or within formal academic courses on a modular or standalone basis.

I am available to consult on family history matters generally, including advising DNA project managers how to run their projects efficiently and family history groups generally to survey their members, and to write articles, blog posts and project reports.

I am also available for radio and tv interviews on all aspects of family history, including live two-ways and background research and briefings.

This site contains details of my family history experience and interests. The headings above my photo detail my activities, those below practical things that you can follow up yourself on the site. If you want to know more about me, click on my photo or here.
